STATEMENT OF FAITH

Christian Disciples Church

 

Preamble

The sole and absolute authority for this Statement of Faith is the inerrant Word of God in the Hebrew Scriptures and the Greek New Testament Scriptures, which together constitute the canon of the Holy Scriptures.

I. GOD
  • There is one and only one God, and He is one Person

  • The name of God is Yahweh (YHWH)
    — Ex.3:15; 15:3; Jer.16:21
Note: YHWH (יהוה, misrendered as “the LORD” in most Bibles) occurs 6,828 times in the Hebrew Scriptures, whereas Elohim (אֱלֹהִים, “God”) occurs about 2,600 times (sometimes referring to false gods)

  • There is no God besides Yahweh, the only true God

  • God is eternal, immortal, invisible

  • Yahweh alone is the Creator of the heavens and the earth

   II. JESUS CHRIST
  • The Lord Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Son of God

  • There is one God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ

  • Jesus Christ is not Yahweh (not God)

  • Jesus Christ is man, the Son of Man, and the last Adam

  • Jesus Christ was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified; died; buried; and was resurrected from the dead on the third day by the Father.

  • Jesus Christ was exalted to the right hand of God, who made him Lord and Christ, and will come back to earth to establish God’s Kingdom and render God’s Judgment. He is lower than the Father and can do nothing apart from Him, yet has been exalted by God to be His plenipotentiary.

   III. SALVATION
  • There is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus

  • Jesus is the way of salvation, the Lamb of God who was slain to take away the sins of the world

  • Man is created in the image of God; man has fallen into sin and is redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ

  • God dwelled (tabernacled) in Jesus Christ, the temple of God, such that all the fullness of God dwells in him bodily; as a result, God is in Christ reconciling the world to Himself

  • Saving faith is inseparable from the obedience of faith, expressed in total commitment and faithfulness to God

   IV. THE CHURCH
  • The Church (universal) is the body of Christ and the temple of God, composed of the redeemed in Christ, with Christ as the head of the body

  • In one Spirit we are baptized into one body, and made to drink of one Spirit
    — 1Cor.12:13
  • There are two sacraments of the Church: baptism and the Holy Communion

  • We worship Yahweh alone

  • The mission of the Church is to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey all the commands of the Lord Jesus Christ
